Song, 松, ancient wisdom for tension and pain relief
Drs Roger Hartl, Norman Marcus, and Jaspal Singh at the Comprehensive Spine Center at Cornell argue that muscles can be a major source of back pain overlooked by western medicine. Tension, in the form of stress, spasm, trigger point and stiffness can be major contributors to muscle pain. In parallel, Chinese healing arts state that tension can block blood and energy (qi) flow which can lead to pain(不通则通, Bù tōngzé tōng). At core in the T’ai Chi and Qigong practice is Song(松), meaning relaxation.
I adapted this approach to relaxation and relaxed movement to heal severe back pain following my bike accident, and I have further systematized it for our Spine program where we spend a significant amount of time identifying and relieving tension. I suspect that this approach contributes to pain relief for many in the program.
